Maker of the Month - Charlotte Farmer
Well it's December, Santa's well on his way so here's an extra special #MakeroftheMonth - Charlotte Farmer.
I am the proud owner of an adorable Charlotte Farmer cat print and have admired her work for a few years now. She's an amazing British illustrator and screen printer and you can't help but fall in love with her cute little characters.
Here's a little something about Charlotte...
Tell us about yourself and your business, what do you do?
Hello, I'm an illustrator and screen printer.
What inspires your work?
Ooh all sorts of things, though mostly it's about collections of things – especially souvenirs such as stamps, snow globes, also old toys, matchbooks (my dad collects these – he has lots of 80's wine bar ones!), wildlife and favourite pets. I like to think about the relationships between the individual items/animals that make up the collections and what they might have to say to each other. I'm really into small details – so there's always something new to discover. I love colour and my current favourite thing is glow in the dark ink!!
Where do you work? Describe your work space.
I have two spaces – one is behind the sofa in our small flat (which I share with my boyfriend and my demanding cat) – that's where I do all my drawings and Photoshop magic. The other is at Spike Print Studio in Bristol – it's good for me to go there as it means I get to talk to people.
What do you love about your job?
That it's different every day and I'm the boss – I had a summer job working in a pub once when I was at uni and I realised I hated being told what to do!
When you’re not working, how do you spend your free time?
At the moment – the run up to Christmas there isn't that much free time to be had – though when I do have some I enjoy going for coffee and playing tennis – not at the same time. I've also just started doing cross fit – so today I can barely use my arms.
What are you currently working on?
Making things for Christmas and a book about making things for your hamster!!
Any projects or events coming up that you’d like to share with us?
My second colouring book “The Passive Aggressive Colouring book” is out in January, (the first one, “the Hipster colouring book” is out now!!) I've also got loads of Christmas fairs coming up, including the Print Show at Coston Hall in Bristol on the 22nd Nov and the Crafty Fox market in Peckham on 12th Dec.
Who are your designer favourites?
I love Hockney’s work especially his early etchings, Andy Warhol’s illustrations, Cy Twombly, Amelie Fontaine – a French illustrator, Carson Ellis, Marcel Dzama....I'm always finding new favourites on Pinterest when I'm being easily distracted from work.
Finally, any advice for those budding designer makers out there?
It can take a while to get established and you might have to juggle work with crappy jobs (I’ve worked in a book shop, a cheese shop, made sandwiches and sold posh gifts in my time) but it's definitely worth it in the end.
